De eerste vermeldingen van Muiderberg dateren uit het einde van de 13e eeuw. De Nederlandse graaf Floris V werd leenman over Muiderberg in 1280. Hij werd in 1296 in Hakkelaarsbrug vermoord door politieke tegenstanders. De Nederlandse Hervormde Kerk, oorspronkelijk gebouwd als een kapel ter ere van Floris V, dateert uit 1324. Het werd later uitgebreid tot een kerk en werd het centrum van het dorp. Het gebied werd voortdurend bedreigd door overstromingen van de Zuiderzee totdat de zeedijk in 1916 werd versterkt. Westerland, het meest westelijke dorp op het voormalige eiland Wieringen, ligt in het westen. Het dorp bevindt zich op het hoogste punt van Wieringen, ongeveer 13 meter boven zeeniveau. Het ontstond geleidelijk door bebouwing langs de stuwwallen die overeind bleven na de voorlaatste ijstijd. De naam Wieringen is waarschijnlijk afgeleid van het oud-Friese woord "wir", wat hoogte betekent. In vroegere tijden was Wieringen namelijk een verhoogd gebied in een groot veengebied. In de 12e eeuw werd het een eiland, maar sinds de inpoldering van het Wieringermeer is het weer onderdeel van het vasteland. Daarom wordt het ook wel het geheime Waddeneiland genoemd.
