In de 11e eeuw werden Noord-Scharwoude en Zuid-Scharwoude samengevoegd. In 1094 stond de plaats bekend als Scorlewalth. Zuid-Scharwoude werd voor het eerst vermeld in 1094 in een eeuwenoude oorkonde uit Utrecht.
